Delhi Reports 5,100 Covid Cases In Biggest One-Day Spike This Year

2,340 people were discharged in the last 24 hours, taking the recovery rate to 95.84 per cent

Delhi has logged 5,100 coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, which is its biggest single-day Covid figure this year. The sharp rise in cases comes as over a lakh tests were conducted in the national capital in a day for the first time.

Delhi had reported 3,548 cases on Monday, 4,033 cases on Sunday, 3,567 cases on last Saturday and 3,594 cases on Friday.

According to the Delhi government, out of 1,03,453 tests conducted in the last 24 hours, 69,667 were the gold-standard RT-PCR tests.

With this, the positivity rate has dropped below 5 per cent.

Delhi currently has 17,332 active cases.

Amid a more rapid second wave of infections, the Delhi government today imposed a 10 pm to 5 am night curfew till April 30.

The "sudden increase in Covid-19 cases" and "high positivity rate" meant a night curfew was needed, the Delhi Government said in its order.

During night curfew hours, those going for vaccinations and the movement of essential services will be allowed with e-passes, officials said.

India is facing its worst Covid surge. On Monday, for the first time, it reported over a lakh single-day cases. Today, it reported 96,982 cases and 442 deaths.

Experts believe mutant strains and people's carelessness about following rules like wearing masks and maintaining social distance are behind the spurt in cases.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had urged the centre to allow the Delhi government to vaccinate all permissible age groups.

The centre today said vaccinations will not be opened to all ages any time soon.
