Delhi's water woes grow this summer

New Delhi: Delhi has been without water since the last 10 days. Life in north Delhi is like living in a desert refugee camp.

The situation is so bad that residents are using disposable plates and cups to conserve every last drop of liquid gold.

At a Delhi citizen Prabhjeet Kaur's store in New Rajinder Nagar, bottled water is like gold. Taps in the area have been dry for 10 days now.

",I couldn't send my child to school today because his uniform was too dirty. He said he can't possibly wear that. I'm going to have to send the clothes to the dry cleaners,", said Prabhjeet Kaur.

Nearly one out of very six people in Delhi is experiencing the water crisis because two reservoirs that get Yamuna river water haven't filled up this summer.

The Delhi Jal Board says Haryana hasn't released the water to these reservoirs. Apart from Rajinder Nagar, Civil Lines, Paharganj, many areas of Central Delhi are also facing a similar problem.

",The water problem has changed our entire lifestyle. Instead of meeting each other and saying good morning or namaste, we ask paani aaya (Is there water in pipe lines?) and if by chance we get even a bucket of water it is like a baby has been born,", said a local resident.

",Our colony has gone BPL - below poverty line. Basic amenities are not there,", said another resident.

People are also trying out new means to recycle water.

",Whenever we take utensils and whatever we wash, we keep that water and afterwards, when we go to urinate we put one cup of that water,", said a resident.

The Jal Board says it is in talks with the Haryana government. The crisis should end in two or three days. But when you are buying water to do just about everything that can be a long and painful wait.
