Chandigarh:

Cash worth over Rs 2.22 crores of demonetised currency was seized from two vehicles at a checking point in Palwal district's Hodal area, police said today.

"An amount of Rs 2.22 crores in the now-scrapped denomination of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 notes were seized from two multi utility vehicles, which were intercepted at a 'nakka' point here yesterday," Rahul Sharma, SP Palwal, said.

Those driving the vehicles stopped just short of the checking point and managed to escape under the cover of darkness, he said.

"We have registered an FIR under sections 379 and 411 of the IPC. We also informed the Income Tax authorities. The teams from the IT department are investigating the matter along with us. Further action will depend after gauging whether the cash was illegal or legal," Mr Sharma said.

He said the vehicles used in the crime were registered in the name of a realty firm.

"The vehicles were registered on a Faridabad address. The Income Tax teams are also questioning the vehicle owners," Mr Sharma added.
