Lucknow:
The body of Yogendra Singh Sachan is being cremated today after a series of controversies surrounding the mysterious death of the deputy Chief Medical Officer (CMO) in the Family Welfare Department in a Lucknow jail.
The State Human Rights Commission has sent a notice to the UP government on Mr Sachan's death to which the authorities are expected to reply by July 12.
Earlier, Mr Sachan's family had said that they will not conduct his last rites unless the government orders a CBI inquiry into the matter. His wife had filed an affidavit on Friday alleging that her husband was killed because he was about to expose senior officers.
"Facts are being hidden from us. They are not saying openly that this is a case of murder not suicide, cold blooded murder. Once we get permission for a CBI enquiry we will cremate the body," Mr Sachan's brother had said.
Mr Sachan, charged with plotting the murder of two CMOs, was found dead in the district jail hospital on Wednesday evening.
His was found hanging from a ceiling fan in the toilet of the jail hospital. Police termed it a case of suicide and even the UP government maintains the same.
However, the autopsy revealed nine flesh wounds - eight of them caused by a weapon. A blade was found near his corpse. .
Opposition parties like the BJP and the Samajwadi Party believe he was being made a scapegoat for the murders of two Chief Medical Officers, and was killed to protect government officials who had been colluding with contractors to loot the state.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati had earlier suspended five staff members of the Lucknow district jail where Mr Sachan was found dead under mysterious circumstances.
He was named as the main accused by the police in the murder case of CMO (Family Welfare) BP Singh following the arrest of three people by the Special Task Force (STF) on June 17.
Mr Singh was shot dead by unidentified persons on the morning of April 2 when he had gone out for a walk.
The STF had on June 17 arrested three persons - Ram Krishna Verma, Anand Tewari and Vinod Sharma - who had confessed to the crime and named Mr Sachan, the deputy CMO, as the main conspirator.
Mr Sachan's superiors had accused him of financial irregularities in purchase of drugs and equipment under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM).
