New Delhi: The hanging of Yakub Memon was not the reason why a top Supreme Court official has resigned, claimed administrative officials of the top court today in a press statement.
On July 30, in a post on Facebook, Dr Anup Surendranath used the phrase "darkest hours for the Supreme Court of India" in reference to the proceedings that saw three judges refusing to stop the hanging of Memon, convicted for financing the serial blasts in Mumbai in 1993 in which 257 people were killed.
He said he was resigning as the Deputy Registrar, a post he had taken up a year ago on contract.
Today, a statement from the Supreme Court said, "He resigned on his own request as he wanted to pursue his research. Dr Surendranath has returned to teaching at the National Law University in Delhi. He led the educational institution's attempt to prevent the hanging of Memon."
