Bangalore:
Hours after his son revealed that Deve Gowda had been offered a bribe for a defence contract when he was the Prime Minister, the politician said this was untrue. A family conference appears necessary.
Deve Gowda emerged quickly as a twitter trend after his son, HD Kumaraswamy told the media in Bangalore that during his father's term as PM, middlemen approached both of them for a contract in exchange for a kickback. He did not offer any evidence to support his claim.
Deve Gowda was Prime Minister of India between June 1996 and April 1997.
When asked why he had not shared these details earlier, Mr Kumaraswamy said that the Army Chief's revelations had provoked him to share his experience.
On Monday, General VK Singh who is the Army Chief said that in 2010, he was offered 14 crores to purchase trucks for the army. The revelation has opposition parties and military experts pointing to the exigent need to look at how defence equipment is bought.
In Delhi today, Defence Minister AK Antony said that six companies have been blacklisted by him for malpractices in defence acquisition processes.
"The government has a zero tolerance policy for corruption and has decided that in the procurement process, if any malpractices are found at any stage, it would not hesitate to cancel the contracts," Mr Antony said.
