Chandipur, Orissa: "Dhanush", the naval version of India's indigenously developed surface-to-surface Prithvi missile system was test fired from a naval ship about 40 nautical miles from here in side the Bay of Bengal today.
According to a defence source, "the mission was jointly conducted by a naval team and scientists of the DRDO". "The missile was flight tested from a naval ship in the Bay of Bengal at about 11:30 A.M."
"Dhanush" which is capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear warheads, is a single stage missile with liquid propellant and can hit both sea as well as shore based targets of 350 km range with 500kg payload.
Though the missile in its first test of development stage on April 11, 2000 had failed due to some technical snags developed during the blast-off phase, but had met with success in it's "range and pay load capabilities".
The last trial of "Dhanush" was successfully conducted from a naval ship off Orissa coast on 30 March 2007.
