Lal Krishna Advani had claimed that he was not consulted before Jaswant Singh boarded a flight to Kandahar. Advani's comments were made to Shekhar Gupta on NDTV's Walk the Talk in March 2008.
After he was expelled by the BJP, Jaswant Singh told NDTV that this was incorrect. When asked why he didn't contradict Advani earlier, he said, "I covered for him as a colleague".
Now, Jaswant Singh's version has been backed by Brajesh Mishra and Yashwant Singh. All three men were present, along with Advani, at the meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security in December 1999. Mishra, who was then the National Security Advisor, says the decision to send Jaswant Singh to Kandahar was unanimous. His mission was to swap three terrorists for nearly 200 passengers who were taken hostage IC 814 when it was hijacked.
