Didn't Do It, Rocky Yadav Said On Camera; Cops, However, Claim Opposite

Gaya, Bihar: Rocky Yadav, who disappeared to dodge arrest after allegedly shooting a teen who over-took his car, has, according to the police in Bihar, confessed to the crime. The murder in Gaya has created the newest installment in a debate about the children of the rich and powerful in India acting as if they can, quite literally, get away with murder.

Mr Yadav is now in jail in Gaya. The police claims that the 24-year-old, whose mother is a politician and has gone underground, has said that on Saturday evening, he was driving with his bodyguard in his silver Range Rover when a car that was speeding over-took them. "I was infuriated by this," Mr Yadav has reportedly said, "I fired a shot in the air to make the car stop."

The 19-year-old was beaten up and later shot dead in Bihar's Gaya district.

The police says that Mr Yadav admitted that he then went up to the car with his bodyguard and began beating the group of young men inside. When the car began driving away, Mr Yadav then allegedly shot at it, and a bullet hit Aditya Sachdeva, a 19-year-old who had just completed his Class 12 board exams.

Any confession made by Mr Yadav to the police cannot be used against him in court; however, it can help the police in piecing together crucial information about how Mr Sachdeva was killed. If he has indeed outlined the above chain of events to the police, it is vastly different than what he told reporters yesterday.

Mr Yadav, whose Facebook account shows a penchant for posing with guns, said he was in Delhi on the night that Mr Sachdeva was killed.

Garima Mallik, a senior police officer handling the case in Gaya, told NDTV that while she cannot comment on his conflicting statements, his confession will be corroborated with other evidence and information.

Mr Yadav's mother, Manorama Devi, was suspended yesterday from the ruling Janata Dal United or JDU in Bihar. While searching for Mr Yadav, the police uncovered bottles of alcohol in a home owned by her, and Bihar is a dry state. That gives the government, which has been scalded by the links to Manorama Devi, a pretext to arrest her.

Manorama Devi's husband, Bindi Yadav, was found and arrested before his son on charges of helping Mr Yadav to escape after the shooting.

Mr Yadav was found hiding in factory along with a pistol worth 10 lakhs.
