The two youths who were shot, died at the hospital.
New Delhi:
A student's brother and his friend have been shot dead in Uttar Pradesh because they had dared to object to ragging.
The youth was a second year student of the government-sponsored MG Polytechnic in Hathras. After being repeatedly ragged, he complained about it at home.
His father and elder brother took up the issue with the college authorities. But in the process, they also got into an argument with some seniors who were allegedly involved.
Last night, the student's brother and his friend were shot dead.
"My younger son was being ragged in school. When we objected, those boys fired on my elder son and his friend," his father said.
Police, too, agree that ragging was behind the two deaths.
"The student's father and brother went to the institute and lodged a complaint. They also had a fight with a few people there over the ragging issue. There was a brawl with one Abhishek Yadav, a senior student. The shooting was a fallout of that," said Deputy Inspector General Satyendra Vir Singh.
In their complaint, the family had named lecturer BL Yadav and two students. Police have filed a First Information Report, or FIR, against all three. The lecturer and one of the students have been arrested.
No action was taken on the disciplinary complaint lodged with the polytechnic, reports PTI, quoting Inspector General Sujit Pandey. The institute has denied any incident of ragging.
