Chennai: DMK MP J K Ritheesh was among ten persons detained after a clash between his partymen and DMDK-AIADMK workers at Kalavankudi in the district today, police said.

Ten persons were injured in the clash that broke out when panchayat officials were making arrangements to lay a road at Kavalankudi which was opposed by the villagers, who said the work had been taken up only because of the April 13 assembly elections. One of the protesters took away the key of a road laying machine.

Soon a large number of people gathered and asked the officials to stop the work. When DMDK and the AIADMK men joined the locals, some unidentified persons accompanying Ramanthapuram Lok Sabha member Ritheesh allegedly started pelting stones at the crowd.

AIADMK and DMDK men also threw stones and ten persons were injured in the clash. AIADMK's Narayanan (40) has been hospitalised in a serious condition, police said.

The villagers then blocked the road traffic demanding the arrest of the MP and his supporters. Police said ten persons including the MP had been detained for interrogation.
