DMK workers want to be arrested, but there's little room in prison

DMK workers want to be arrested, but there's little room in prison
Chennai: The DMK's 'fill the jails' demonstration tomorrow has kept the prison authorities on their toes. Thousands of DMK workers are likely to court arrest to condemn what they see as 'vindictive police action' against their leaders on land grabbing and other charges.

The plan to house the DMK cadre in block 1 of the Puzhal Prison on the outskirts of Chennai has met with resistance. Sources have told NDTV that convicted prisoners kept in this block are protesting moves to have them vacated.

Prison authorities are unavailable for comment. Sources say the situation is being brought under control.

For mass agitations, marriage halls are usually used to house people as they are let off by the evening. But with Karunanidhi instructing his partymen not to apply for bail, their imprisonment could be a protracted affair. This is the challenge faced by the authorities of the already overcrowded prisons.
