Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh:
A doctor and his wife has been taken in custody with three others for allegedly stealing a newborn child, police said.
One Tejpal and his wife Kiran, a physically challenged couple, had complained that on December 8 their newborn child was allegedly stolen from the district hospital by an unidentified woman, DSP Ramanand Kushwah said.
Acting on the complaint, police searched and recovered the child from the possession of one Rani, a resident of Nehtaur, who told them that Dr Lakhan Singh Pal, a SP leader and former head of UP Medical Council, and his wife Chandrawati allegedly sold the newborn to her for Rs 90,000, DSP Kushwah said.
Police took Rani, Dr Pal and Chandrawati in custody with two others for questioning.
While, Dr Pal claimed the child was born in his hospital to one Munendra's wife and then he allegedly gave the infant to Rani, DSP Kushwah said.
Reportedly, Dr Pal was head of Uttar Pradesh medical council during BSP regime in the state.
An investigation is underway in the matter, the DSP said.
