Don't reduce political discoure to hypocrisy, said Congress.
New Delhi:
The Congress has hit back at arch rival Narendra Modi's constant reference to its vice president Rahul Gandhi as 'shehzada', another word for prince.
"In NDA meets, joint rallies, does the BJP refer to Sukhbirji and Uddhavji as 'Shehzade'? Lets not reduce our pol (sic) discourse to hypocrisies," Congress leader and Minister of State for Home RPN Singh tweeted a while ago.
At a rally in Patna yesterday, Mr Modi spent a part of his hour-long speech to explain why he has christened Mr Gandhi as a 'shehzada'.
"Stop practising dynastic politics and I will stop using the word 'shehzada'," said Mr Modi, repeating the allegation that the Congress is a family-first party.
Uddhav Thackeray and Sukhbir Singh Badal are Mr Modi's partners in the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance.
Mr Thackeray now heads the Shiv Sena, a party founded by his father Bal Thackeray, while his cousin Raj Thackeray heads another regional political party in Maharashtra.
Sukhbir Singh Badal, son of Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, is president of the Shiromani Akali Dal as well as his father's deputy in the state government. His wife, Harsimrat Kaur Badal, is a Member of Parliament from Bathinda.
Mr Gandhi in his recent rallies in election-bound states had spoken about emotional memories of his grandmother, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and father, Rajiv Gandhi, accusing the BJP of divisive politics.
"When he should be talking about people's welfare, family serials are being run," Mr Modi had said at another rally in Rajasthan last week.
Though political parties argue that elections in India are not only about personalities but also ideologies and policies, it is increasingly becoming clear that for the Congress and the BJP, the 2014 campaign may revolve around Mr Modi and Mr Gandhi, who is expected to be the Congress' PM pick if the party wins a third straight term.
