New Delhi: As innovations go, this perhaps takes the cake. An anti-plastic activist has come up with cutlery - spoons, forks and knives - that you can eat after eating with them.
Narayana Peesapathy says he got the idea after contemplating the huge amount of plastic waste that piles up from disposables.
India uses 1.2 billion plastic spoons each year, non-bio degradable material which can cause cancer and destroy the environment.
His answer was cutlery made of hard-baked grain, flavoured with ajwain, rock salt and celery, which, users say, are both healthy and tasty.
Having a shelf life of more than three years, these come in many flavours - ginger, mint, garlic, black pepper.
"There is no coating here. In fact it is entirely nutritious, this spoon... it has jowar (millet), blended with rice and wheat, without preservatives... just like dehydrated vegetables," said Mr Peesapathy.
"You can have your hot soup with this, and you can stir your sugar... if you don't want to eat it you can throw it. It decomposes in 4-5 days," he added.
"I couldn't believe it. The first time I saw it, I thought it was wood. When I started working here, I started eating it with curry. It tastes delicious," said one of the workers at his factory.
