New Delhi:
The Supreme Court has asked doctors to reconsider a strike that began today. The judges said they do not expect doctors to resort to strikes, and have asked them to explain their stand within four weeks.
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has asked doctors across the country to skip work in protest against alleged attempts by the government to curb the Association's autonomy. The Association is opposed to the government's plans to amend laws that would impact private practice among other features.
The Association has promised that emergency services will not be affected by the strike.
The doctors have been taken to court by an NGO named People for Better Treatment. They say that the doctors' strike will paralyse health services, and is illegal and unconstitutional.
The Association that has called the strike is against the government's decision to set up a National Commission for Health to oversee doctors. They say this will dilute the authority of doctor-led associations.
