Dr Sachan's death: Murder case lodged

Dr Sachan's death: Murder case lodged
Lucknow: The Lucknow police have finally registered a murder case in connection with the death of Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr YS Sachan. An FIR against unknown persons has been registered based on a complaint by Dr Sachan's widow.

Despite widespread protests and demands from Dr Sachan's family that the case must be handed over to the CBI, the Mayawati government has refused to do so, instead calling the death as suicide.

The state government, however, has already ordered a judicial probe.

Dr Sachan was found dead inside the toilet of the Lucknow district jail earlier this week. The 52-year-old was the Deputy Chief Medical Officer in the government's Family Welfare department. After jail officials said he had committed suicide, a post-mortem revealed that his body has eight injuries caused by a sharp weapon. Dr Sachin died days before he was to be questioned by the police about a case that seemed poised to embarrass the government.

"The postmortem report clearly indicates that it's a clear-cut case of murder," Dr Sachan's brother, R K Sachan, said while asking for a CBI investigation.

He was arrested in April for the murder of his boss, Dr BP Singh. The government said Dr Sachan was guilty of corruption, and hired assassins to kill Dr Singh to prevent him from exposing Dr Sachan's financial crimes. The government also accused Dr Sachan of links to the murder of Dr Vinod Arya, who was Dr Singh's predecessor.

The department these men worked for has an annual budget of 3000 crores. Manufacturers who supply drugs and other medical equipment were reportedly colluding with officials in the department for highly-inflated contracts.
