Drama at Jayalalithaa's tea estate in Ooty
Kodanad: Close to 400 supporters of Jayalalithaa rose to her defence today at a tea factory owned by her at Kodanad near Ooty. Government officials arrived at the factory to inspect construction that is allegedly illegal.

They were not allowed entry. Supporters of the AIAMDK chief say she is merely renovating her factory, and has the necessary clearances from the government. The police soon arrived to prevent the crowd from turning violent.

"They've brought so many policemen, and are trying to enter the premise without permission," said Mani, one of the men who blocked the gate to the factory. This is not an ordinary house, it belongs to the former chief minister," he stressed.

The DMK government in Tamil Nadu has appointed a special committee to investigate this property of Jayalalithaa's. She in turn says the entire inquiry is a low blow aimed at discrediting her politically.

Not an outlandish suggestion in this state. During its earlier tenure in 1996, the DMK-led by Karunanidhi arrested Jayalalithaa in December after filing more than a dozen cases against her. She spent a few weeks in jail, but was not convicted in a single case. When she became Chief Minister, she had Karunanidhi arrested in June 2001, after an FIR accused him in the alleged losses of Rs 12 crore in the construction of the mini-flyovers in Chennai. He was released on July 4, 2001.
