Chandigarh:
The Punjab police will move court to get Olympic medallist boxer Vijender Singh's blood sample over his alleged links to a massive drug haul in Punjab.
Vijender, who was interrogated by a team of Punjab Police officials in Panchkula near Chandigarh, had on Monday refused to give his blood or hair samples.
The boxer has admitted to knowing an NRI named Anoop Singh Kahlon, who was arrested last week for dealing in drugs. More than 26 kilograms of drugs, including heroin, worth Rs 130 crore, were allegedly found at Kahlon's flat in Punjab. A car registered in the name of Vijender's wife was found parked at the alleged dealer's home.
Vijender's sparring partner and national-level boxer Ram Singh has claimed the pair sourced drugs a few times from the dealer as "an adventure". "We had taken very small quantity of drugs, less than two grams each. But we are not habitual takers of drugs and had tried it just for adventure," Ram Singh told IANS.
But Vijender has denied having any links to the case. "I have nothing to do with drugs," he has said.
Ram Singh and Vijender are very close friends and were roommates at the National Institute of Sports (NIS), Patiala, for nearly six years. Ram Singh has been expelled by NIS from its hostel. A panel of coaches searched his hostel room but reportedly did not find anything.
