DUSU polls today; main candidates missing
New Delhi:

The Delhi University Student Union (DUSU) elections will be held on Friday. For the first time since 1991, the main rival student bodies - the ABVP and the NSUI - will not have any candidate for the president's post.

A total of six candidates, three each from the NSUI and the ABVP, were disqualified by the election officer for violating the Lyngdoh Committee Recommendations during campaigning.

The Supreme Court dismissed the petitions by the parties on Friday, upholding the Delhi High Court's dismissal of the petitions on September 1.

So in almost two decades, ABVP and NSUI will not have a candidate fighting for the president's post. The ABVP will have a candidate for the post of vice-president alone and the NSUI will have a candidate for the secretary's post alone.

A total of over 25 candidates will be contesting the elections.

Other student bodies fielding candidates in the elections include Disha Students' Organization, contesting for the first time, Ambedkar Students' Organization of India, Indian National Students' Organization, Student's Federation on India and All India Student's Association.

The polls will be held across 51 voting centres with 714 voting booths and the counting will be held on September 5.
