An earthquake of magnitude 5.2 was reported in Assam this morning. Tremors were felt in neighbouring Meghalaya, northern parts of West Bengal besides Bangladesh, news agency PTI reported.
The epicentre of the earthquake was Goalpara in Lower Assam. The earthquake struck at around 8:45 am at a depth of 14 km, a National Center for Seismology report said. The tremors prompted people to rush out of their homes.
Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) Deputy Directorm Sanjay O'neil Shaw said the place of occurrence was 71 km north of Tura in Meghalaya.
No loss of life or property have been reported so far.
Last month, five incidents of tremors were reported in Assam in a period of 24 hours, with the fifth one being a 4.2-magnitude earthquake on June 19. The epicentre was near Tezpur, the headquarter of Sonitpur district, at a depth of 30 km.
