Nepal was on Tuesday struck by four earthquakes, tremors of which were felt in many parts of India including Delhi-NCR. According to the National Centre for Seismology, the most powerful earthquake occurred in Nepal around 2:51 PM at a depth of 5 kilometer.
What we know so far
- Nepal was first hit by an earthquake of magnitude 4.6 at 2:25 PM. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometer.
- Nepal was then hit by an earthquake of magnitude 6.2 at 2:51 PM at a depth of 5 kilometer, tremors of which were felt in north India, including Uttarakhand and Delhi-NCR. Nepal then recorded two aftershocks at 3:06 PM and 3:19 PM.
- In India, the earthquake tremors were also felt in Haryana's Gurgaon and Uttar Pradesh's Lucknow. The tremors were also felt in Chandigarh and Rajasthan's Jaipur.
- Visuals on social media platforms snowed people in Delhi, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh rushing out of their buildings as strong tremors were felt in different parts of north India.
- Delhi, where massive tremors were felt, is susceptible to big earthquakes as it lies close to a Faultline, geologists say. The city falls in seismic zone IV - a very high-risk zone. India is divided into four seismic zones — II, III, IV, and V -- according to the increasing intensity and frequency of earthquakes.
