Efforts on to restore peace in Sangli

Sangli:

Efforts are on by authorities to defuse the tension between two communities in Sangli district of Maharashtra.

Curfew has been imposed here for four days after there was a clash between communities during Ganesh Visarjan. The curfew in both Miraj and Sangli has been extended till 2 pm on Tuesday.  Shops and offices in Kolhapur city were closed on Sunday, but re-opened on Monday morning.

There is heavy security in the area. Around 1200 additional security officers have been brought in to keep the situation under control. 151 Ganesh Mandals have not yet taken their idols out for Visarjan in protest. 12 Ganesh idols were immersed on Monday under police supervision.

Meanwhile, BJP leader Gopinath Munde was stopped from leaving Mumbai to visit Sangli. Authorities are nervous about communal tension escalating because of visits by politicians.
