New Delhi:
There is consensus in the Congress for a political initiative and the Eid peace package could be announced today, sources told NDTV on Friday. This came after the Congress core group met in New Delhi and discussed the proposed peace initiative.
The Prime Minister discussed partial lifting of the controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from some districts.
Sources have told NDTV that the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) backs amendments to the current act, and also to lifting it from some districts.
The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) will meet on Monday in New Delhi to take a final decision.
Apart from lifting the AFSPA from some districts, the peace initiative is likely to include a fresh offer for dialogue to all Kashmiri groups, and could also see political prisoners being released.
The Army Chief is reportedly opposed to diluting the AFSPA. General VK Singh met the Prime Minister before the core group meeting on Friday, to convey the concerns of the Army top brass.
