New Delhi: Eid-ul-Fitr will be celebrated in India on Monday with the sighting of the moon.

"The moon was sighted tonight and Eid will be celebrated tomorrow," a spokesperson of Fatehpuri Masjid said quoting the Shahi Imam of Fatehpuri Masjid, Mufti Mohd Mukarram Ahmed.

Eid-ul-Fitr marks the end of the holy month of Ramzan, which commenced on August 21.

The President, the Vice-President and the Prime Minister on Sunday greeted the nation on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr, hoping the festival would inspire the people to follow the path of love, compassion and tolerance.

"Eid-ul-Fitr brings joy and happiness at the culmination of the holy month of Ramzan. May this festival strengthen mutual goodwill and inspire each one of us to follow the path of love, compassion and tolerance," President Pratibha Patil said.

Greeting the people, Vice President Hamid Ansari said the festival symbolises compassion, brotherhood and the spirit of sharing.

"May the occasion fill our life with peace, prosperity and harmony and promote fraternity among the people of our country," Ansari said.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said, "Eid-ul-Fitr commemorates austerity, brotherhood and the spirit of sharing. It reflects the true spirit of our composite culture".

"May the festival strengthen our resolve to promote tolerance, peace and harmony," he said.

Extending her good wishes to the people on the joyous occasion, Congress President Sonia Gandhi said, "Eid-ul-Fitr comes after a month of fasting, a period of soul elevating in which the essentials of faith are rejuvenated".

"These include Islam's message of peace and fraternity among people," Gandhi said.
