Lok Sabha Elections Phase 2 2019: Highlights From Key States - 51% Polling In Bengal Till 1 pm, 38% In UP, 31% in Bihar

Elections 2019 Phase 2 Voting: West Bengal recorded the highest voting per cent 51.6% till 1 PM.

Polling in West Bengal witnessed several incidents of violence, including an attack on CPM candidate Mohammad Salim's car. Stones were hurled at Mr Salim's vehicle when he was on way to cast his vote in Patagora of Raigunj constituency. 

Despite the violence, West Bengal, along with Tamil Nadu, witnessed a turnout of over 30 per cent till 1 pm in the second phase. 

Polling is also being held in 14 seats in Karnataka, 10 in Maharashtra, eight in UP, five each in Assam, Bihar and Odisha, three each in Chhattisgarh and West Bengal, two in Jammu and Kashmir and one seat each in Manipur and Puducherry. However, voter turnout has been low in Bihar, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Jammu and Kashmir.

Several high profile candidates are in fray among the 1,600-odd contestants in this phase. Union ministers Jitendra Singh, Jual Oram, Sadananda Gowda and Pon Radhakrishnan, former prime minister H D Deve Gowda and DMK's Dayanidhi Maran, A Raja and Kanimozhi, BJP's Tesjaswi Surya and Hema Malini, former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Farooq Abdullah to name a few. 

Meanwhile, simultaneous polls are also held for a few Assembly seats in Odisha, including the two constituencies from where chief minister Naveen Patnaik is contesting.

Election 2019: 69% average polling recorded in three Chhattisgarh constituencies

An average 69 per cent polling was recorded in three constituencies of Chhattisgarh where polling was held in the second phase of Lok Sabha elections on Thursday, an official said.

Voting was held in Kanker, Rajnandgaon and Mahasamund Lok Sabha seats, all having Naxal presence, the official said.

Voting ended in four Assembly segments - Antagarh, Keshkal, Bhanupratappur and Kanker - in the Kanker Lok Sabha constituency and Manpur-Mohla Assembly segment of Rajnandgaon parliamentary seat at 3 pm as per the schedule, he said.

A 53-year-old polling officer died of heart attack today in Karnataka's Chamarajanagar reserved (SC) Lok Sabha constituency where polling was underway, an official said. Shantamurthy, who hailed from Hannur, suffered the heart attack at polling booth number 48 around 10.30 a.m. and died on the way to a hospital.

VIPs, including political leaders, celebrities and candidates were among the early voters who exercised their franchise in 14 Lok Sabha seats across central and southern Karnataka today. "Among the early voters were 86-year-old Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) supremo HD Deve Gowda, his wife Chennamma, his two sons -- Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy and PWD Minister HD. Revanna, their wives Anitha and Bhavani, and his grandsons Prajwal and Nikhil," said poll official.

Voting picked up with an overall polling percentage of 24.31 being reported from eight parliamentary constituencies in Uttar Pradesh in the first four hours. Polling is underway in Nagina (SC), Amroha, Bulandshahr (SC), Aligarh, Hathras (SC), Fatehpur Sikri, Mathura and Agra (SC) constituencies in the second phase of polls.

According to the Election Commission, polling percentage till 11.00 am was - 23.78 in Nagina, 24.64 in Amroha, 24.94 in Bulandshahr, 23 in Aligarh, 25.93 in Hathras, 23.71 in Mathura, 25 in Agra and 23.47 in Fatehpur Sikri. Polling gathered the maximum pace in Aligarh and Mathura after a slow start. In Aligarh, the polling percentage touched 23 per cent by 11.00am, from 7.6 per cent at 9.00 am. Similarly, in Mathura, the polling percentage at 9.00 am was 8.82 per cent, and at 11.00 AM the polling percentage surged to 23.71 per cent.

Lok Sabha Polls 2019: 33.5% voter turnout till 11 am in West Bengal

West Bengal recorded 33.5% voter turnout till 11 am, while the turnout for other states like Tamil Nadu 30.6%, Uttar Pradesh, 23.4%, Jammu & Kashmir 15.1%, Maharashtra 21.5% and Karnataka 19.6% was recorded respectively.

Nearly 17% polling recorded in West Bengal polls

Nearly 17 per cent of the electorate cast their votes amid stray incidents of violence in the three northern West Bengal constituencies in the second phase of Lok Sabha elections today. Tea garden workers were among those who turned out in strength in the Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri constituencies, while Muslim community members were seen in good numbers at the prestigious Raiganj seat in the early hours.

In the first two hours till 9 am, the overall polling percentage was 16.78, with Raiganj recording 17.45, Jalpaiguri 16.84 and Darjeeling 16.14 per cent turnout, an Election Commission (EC) official said in Kolkata. Voting across 5,390 polling stations began at 7 am and will end at 6 pm.
