Election Commission apologises for missing names in Maharashtra voters' lists

New Delhi: The Election Commission today apologised for the large number of names missing from voters' lists in Maharashtra and said it would investigate.

"We will look into the matter and we apologise for the inconvenience caused to voters," Election Commissioner HS Brahma said.

Tens of thousands of names were missing from the voters' lists on Thursday, when Maharashtra voted in the sixth phase of the national election. In Mumbai, around three lakh voters could not find their name on the list. Among them were HDFC chairman Deepak Parekh, lawyer Ram Jethmalani and Marathi  actor Atul Kulkarni.

A group of citizens have threatened to go to court.

The Election Commission said they cannot vote again in this election, but the error would be corrected before the Maharashtra assembly election later this year.

The names were reportedly left out in "a clean-up" drove to remove voters who have been missing in action for long, have moved out or died.

The supervision and verification had been faulty, admitted Mr Brahma, who is one of the three election commissioners.

Mr Brahma said voters were also partly responsible as they could have pointed out that their names were missing on March 9, when the final voters' lists were verified.

Mumbai recorded a turnout of 53% on Thursday, a sharp rise from its previous election but far less than many other parts of the country.
