Shimla: With an aim to spread awareness about the importance of voting, the Election Commission of India has chosen a 22-year-old visually-impaired woman from Himachal Pradesh as the 'youth icon' for the upcoming state Assembly polls.
Ajay Srivastav, nodal officer for matters relating to disabilities in the Himachal Pradesh University (HPU), said that he has received an information in this regard from the EC.
Muskan, who is pursuing a post graduate course in music from the HPU, would motivate the youth to take part in the election process and exercise their franchise, he said.
It is for the first time that a visually-impaired person from the state has been picked up as an icon face by the EC to spread awareness about the democratic process and importance of vote.
Hailing from remote Chirgaon area in Rohru subdivision of Shimla district, Muskan has been a meritorious student throughout and was given a laptop by the government for coming in merit in Class 12 examinations under a scheme of the government.
Runner up of 'Voice of Himachal' (junior category), Muskan has been the winner of the HPU youth festival twice and has also been an ace performer during the summer festival.
The Election Commission of India would also honour Muskan at a function at Gaiety Theater tomorrow.
With the term of the 68-member Assembly coming to an end on January 7, 2018, elections could be held sometime in November as most parts of the hill state are covered under snow in December.
