Badaun: Chief Election Commissioner SY Qureshi has disqualified Umlesh Yadav, the sitting BSP legislator from Bisauli in Uttar Pradesh's Badaun district and barred her for three years from contesting any election for a paid news item.
The Election Commission order pointed out that Umlesh had paid Rs 48,800 to the local editions of Hindi newspapers Amar Ujala and Dainik Jagran for publishing news items on April 17, 2007, just one day before the polling, with a view to boost her prospects.
Later, she concealed the expenses on "paid news" in her affidavit to the commission.
"Paid news is a regular problem with us and we have some guidelines in place. We are taking steps and we will take steps in due course of time," said Mr Qureshi.
