New Delhi: The Election Commission will celebrate the fifth National Voters' Day (NVD) across the country on January 25 on the "Easy Registration, Easy Correction" theme, a statement said today.

A function will also be held in the national capital which will be presided over by former president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

"Awards for the best electoral practices to Chief Electoral Officers and District Election Officers will also be given during the occasion.

Awards will also be given to media houses and civil society organisations for best campaign in Voters' Education and Awareness," the Election Commission statement said.

"The Commission's objective through NVD is to increase enrolment of voters, especially of the newly eligible ones.

The National Voters' Day is also utilised to spread awareness among voters regarding effective participation in the electoral process," the statement added.

The Election Commission of India was established on January 25, 1950.

The government decided to celebrate January 25 every year as 'National Voters' Day' to encourage more young voters to take part in the political process and it started from January 25, 2011 to mark the Election Commission foundation day.
