Election Commission to issue notice to Gopinath Munde after his claim that Rs 8-crore was spent in 2009 polls

Election Commission to issue notice to Gopinath Munde after his claim that Rs 8-crore was spent in 2009 polls
Mumbai: The Election Commission is likely to issue a notice to BJP leader Gopinath Munde, asking him to explain his comments that he spent Rs 8 crore in the last Lok Sabha elections against the prescribed limit of Rs. 25 lakh. According to sources, Mr Munde will be given a week's time to reply to the notice.

The Congress says Mr Munde should be disqualified. "Gopinath Munde has spent Rs 8 crore; it is way too much for the set limit. He should be disqualified," Congress Spokesperson Sanjay Nirupam said today.

The government had yesterday demanded that the Election Commission take cognizance of the BJP leader's remarks.

Mr Munde, an MP from Beed and BJP's deputy leader in the Lok Sabha, had claimed on Thursday in Mumbai that Rs. 8 crore were spent during his 2009 Lok Sabha election campaign.

In his speech Mr Munde had said, "I spent Rs. 29,000 when I contested my first Assembly poll in 1980. Rs. 8 crore were spent for my last (2009 Lok Sabha) election."

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and former BJP chief Nitin Gadkari also were present at the function.
