Mizoram Election Results 2023 Highlights: The votes polled for the assembly elections in Mizoram, which saw a three-way fight between the ruling MNF, the ZPM and the Congress, were counted today.
The Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) stormed to power in the state, dethroning the Mizo National Front (MNF) by winning 27 seats of the 40 seats. The ruling MNF won 10 seats, the BJP two, while the Congress managed just one.
The counting was earlier scheduled to happen on Sunday along with Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Telangana. However, it was deferred by the Election Commission following appeals by political parties, NGOs, churches and students' bodies since Sunday is a significant day for the people of Mizoram - a Christian-majority state.
Five states - Mizoram, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Telangana - went to polls this year, which is being viewed as the semi-final to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Voting was held in Madhya Pradesh on November 17. Rajasthan and Telangana voted in a single phase on November 25 and November 30 respectively. Chhattisgarh voted on November 7 and November 17.

Mizoram's outgoing Chief Minister, Zoramthanga, blamed anti-incumbency in the state for his party's loss, reported news agency ANI. Taking the blame for his poll loss, Zoramthanga said: "Because of the anti-incumbency effect and people not being satisfied with my performance, I lost... I accept the verdict of the people and I hope that the next government will perform well... It (the reason) is the anti-incumbency and Covid onslaught."

Having won 64 out of Telangana's 119 seats, Congress state unit chief Revanth Reddy and Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar met the governor on Sunday night to stake claim to form the government in the state. On Saturday, Mr Shivakumar had been appointed an observer for the legislative party meeting in the state as the party prepared to keep its flock together ahead of the counting.
Seventeen of the 25 ministers in the Ashok Gehlot-led Congress government in Rajasthan, including Govind Ram Meghwal, who led the party's campaign committee, lost in the assembly elections. The BJP returned to power in Rajasthan today, winning 115 of the 199 seats, reported news agency PTI.
Madhya Pradesh Congress chief Kamal Nath has won from Chhindwara, defeating BJP's Vivek Bunty Sahu by 36,594 votes, reported news agency PTI.
Congress heavy-weight and Chhattisgarh's outgoing deputy Chief Minister TS Singh Deo lost the state elections to BJP's Rajesh Agrawal by a margin of 8,367 votes. He was one of the party veterans the Congress was banking on this election.

Union Minister Narendra Singh Tomar defeated the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidate Balveer Singh Dandotiya by 24,461 votes in Dimani in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly polls, reported news agency PTI. Mr Tomar is among the three Union Ministers fielded in the Assembly polls by the BJP. He held different posts before becoming the state president of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha in 1991.

After a big defeat in Rajasthan, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot told NDTV, "The results are shocking. We have not only lost in Rajasthan but also in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, I'm here to help people and I will continue to do so, doesn't matter if I'm in power or not".
