Elections 2009: The Andhra arithmetic

Elections 2009: The Andhra arithmetic
Ranga Reddy:

For the people of Andhra Pradesh, Thursday was not just about voting in MPs. It was also an opportunity to elect the next state government. They voted to decide 154 of their 294 MLAs, along with the Lok Sabha elections. With the entry of Chiranjeevi's Praja Rajyam, the state witnessed a triangular fight for the first time.

"People's verdict will be with Praja Rajyam," says the actor-turned-politician.

Says TDP president Chandrababu Naidu: "Vote is the right everyone has to exercise. Only then they have the right to demand."

Voters had plenty to choose from: the Congress's development plank versus the Telugu Desam's promise of free colour TV sets.

"I will be voting on the basis of  the work done by the Congress government in the past five years," said a voter.

The Congress hopes the arithmetic of the CPI-CPM-TDP-TRS alliance does not play havoc with Congress prospects in Andhra Pradesh.
