Shops were set ablaze and four people reportedly sustained serious injuries.
Violence flared up at Chhatishgarh's Dhamtari - around 90 km from Raipur - today and curfew had to be imposed in the area.
Sources said a few days ago, a Muslim woman had eloped with a Hindu man. Her family brought her back and got her married but she left her husband and ran off with the man again.
Following the incident, clashes took place in the area. Shops were set ablaze and four people reportedly sustained serious injuries.
Dhamtari Additional Superintendent of Police Ashok Sikre, who had gone to control the situation, was among the injured, reported agency Press Trust of India.
"Section 144 has been imposed in the city," PTI quoted district collector Bhim Singh as saying.
The situation, he said, was under control and a large number of police personnel have been deployed to prevent any untoward incident.
