Patna:
In Bihar, the Acute Encephalitis Syndrome has claimed 169 lives, mostly of children, over the last month. These deaths have occurred in a total of about 458 admissions in hospitals in Patna, Muzaffarpur and Gaya.
The season for Acute Encephalitis lasts from June to August in the state every year, and that is why the number of deaths so early on in the state points to an alarming situation.
Last year, out of a total of 821 admissions in various Bihar hospitals, there were 197 deaths. This year, it seems the number of deaths will rise and touch a new record.
Bihar government officials say they are monitoring the situation and trying to take steps to prevent a further outbreak of the disease. There is talk that the disease may be declared an epidemic in the state, enabling more funds to tackle the outbreak, but so far Nitish Kumar's government has remained non-committal on the issue.
