Srinagar: A day after a top Lashkar commander was killed in a gunbattle with security forces in Srinagar, another encounter broke out this morning in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir. A policeman and an army jawan have been injured in the gunbattle; two to three terrorists are believed to be trapped at the encounter site.

A cordon and search operation was launched this morning in Badigam Imama Sahib in Zainapora area of the south Kashmir district. "The search operation turned into an encounter after the hiding militants fired upon the forces, which was retaliated," a police official was quoted as saying by the news agency PTI. The security forces launched the operation acting on specific operation on the presence of terrorists.

On Saturday, three terrorists were killed and three CRPF personnel were injured in an eight-hour-long encounter in the congested Chattabal area in downtown Srinagar. The heavily-armed terrorists were holed up inside a newly-constructed house. Showkat Ahmed Tak, a Lashkar commander and described by the police as a "A++ terrorist", was killed in the encounter.

As the encounter was underway, clashes erupted. A video has surfaced showing a protester knocked down dead and run over by a vehicle of the security forces. The police has called it an accident and said it has taken cognisance of the matter and initiated legal action.
