An area of more than 1300 hectares now core tiger habitat
New Delhi:
It's now official. The Bor Wildlife Sanctuary will be the sixth tiger reserve in Maharashtra. The Ministry of Environment and Forests has approved the state government's proposal for notifying an area covering more than 13,000 hectares of Bor Sanctuary, New Bor Sanctuary and New Bor Extended Wildlife Sanctuary as the core tiger habitat.
Speaking to NDTV, Kishor Rithe of the Satpuda Foundation said, "This is a good move as the Bor Sanctuary provides an important linkage between the Tadoba tiger landscape on the one hand and the Pench landscape on the other. This will help ensure a contiguous tiger territory that is crucial for maintaining the gene pool."
The other tiger reserves in the state are Tadoba-Andhari, Melghat, Pench, Sahyadri and Navegaon-Nagzira. Except for Sahyadri Tiger Reserve, all the other protected areas are in the Vidarbha region of the state.
