A former village head's husband was shot dead by the son of the current pradhan of Jalalpur Amra village of Kannauj Sadar Kotwali area in UP, leading to tension in the area, police said on Sunday.
Police said heavy police force has been deployed in the village to prevent any untoward incident.
Two people have been arrested following an encounter with police, they said, adding that Deepu Rajput, son of village head Ramshree, is on the run. "Rajput along with his accomplices attacked the house of former village head Shivdevi Saturday night. They pumped bullets into Shivdevi's husband Ramdas," Ajay Awasthi, SHO, Sadar Kotwali said.
Superintendent of Police Kunwar Anupam Singh said Ramdas, 45, had political rivalry with Rajput.
He said a case of murder has been registered against six people in the matter.
SHO Awasthi said after the murder, around 3 am on Sunday, a search operation was conducted in Ganga ki Katri where the accused opened fire on the police.
The police retaliated and two of the accused -- Mukesh and Rakesh -- were arrested.
The SP said action will be taken against all the accused under the Gangster Act and the stringent National Security Act.
