New Delhi:
Given how heavily he's besieged by trouble in his state, this couldn't have come at a worse time for J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
The daughter of one of his ministers, GM Saroori, allegedly paid another student to pose as her and take a medical entrance exam for a private medical college in Jammu.
In the same examination hall at Jammu University, another student was caught posing as Lovish Paul, whose father, Ram Paul, is a senior leader in Omar's party.
BS Rathore, the Controller of Examination, Jammu & Kashmir, explained what gave away the game. ''There is a good team of invigilators. They ask relevant questions to candidates they suspect. When the candidates fumble, there is reason to believe they may be proxy candidates."
Ram Paul has resigned from the National Conference. Meanwhile, the Congress leadership in Delhi wants Saroori to quit Omar's cabinet.
Sources say the students who filled in for the politicians' children were paid close to lakh. They are part of a group organized by a man from Patna, Kunj Behari, who identifies intelligent students who need money and sends them across the country to take exams for anyone who's willing to pay.
Omar Abdullah's government has been working overtime during a massive period of unrest in the state- 64 civilians have died since June in clashes with security forces. The exam scandal suggests a lack of morality amid close advisors - a huge public embarrassment for the young chief minister.
