Expect exciting changes in Rahul Gandhi's role: Salman Khurshid
New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi watchers, the Congress promises "wholesome, exciting and rewarding changes" in the party general secretary's role. Soon.

After yet another Congress Working Committee meeting began and ended yesterday without a Rahul announcement, Law Minister and senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid has told NDTV that, "A lot of things happen in the Congress that he is involved in. But these things are not done in a public glare. Whatever is going to happen must be seen a little bit more in public and made more directly accountable to media. This is part of a process of evolution of how a party prepares itself for period of elections, period of rule, period of opposition. Just be patient. All these things will come out in not too distant in future. What you will see will be wholesome, exciting and very rewarding for you as far as the media is concerned."

The buzz on a new frontline role for the Gandhi scion, either in the party or in the government it leads or both, has been on for some time now. There are many who believe that the 42-year-old will be the face of the Congress in the 2014 general elections. At yesterday's CWC meeting, veteran party leader Ajit Jogi reportedly suggested that Mr Gandhi should lead the party in the 2014 elections.

Rahul Gandhi himself said a few months ago that the decision regarding a more-proactive role for him had been taken. He had added that the timing of when he would start playing a bigger role in the party and in the government depended on his "two bosses" - his mother, Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. A few days before that, his mother had told NDTV that "Rahul alone" would have to decide whether to take on that bigger role.

The Prime Minister too has himself said several times in the past that he would welcome it if Mr Gandhi joins the government. "I have always been of the view that Rahul Gandhi should play a more proactive role. I have invited him to be part of the cabinet many times... I hope this time he will consider it very seriously," he told reporters last month. However, he did not divulge when "this time" would be.

A Cabinet reshuffle is said to be on the cards very soon now, but sources have said Mr Gandhi is unlikely to join the Cabinet just yet, though they don't rule out a bigger role in the party.
This is not the first time Mr Khurshid has said wait and watch. Last month, the minister had controversially said, "We have only seen cameos of his (Rahul Gandhi's) thought and ideas like democratizing elections to the Youth Congress. But he has not weaved all of this into a grand announcement. This is a period of waiting."
