Explosion in Jalandhar cantonment; 4 killed

Jalandhar: There's been an explosion in the Jalandhar cantonment in Punjab. Four soldiers have reportedly died.

The explosion took place between 8 and 8:30 on Tuesday evening.

Army sources have ruled out sabotage. They say a battery exploded near some stored petrol, starting a fire.

The incident took place in transport area of the cantonment.

PTI adds:

The explosion took place when some jawans were working in the section when a battery meant for charging vehicles went off triggering a blaze, said Naresh Vig, Public Relations Officer of the Army.

The identity of the deceased was yet to be ascertained, he said adding senior army officials rushed to the spot and fire tenders were pressed into service to control the fire.

Vig said investigation by experts was on to ascertain the cause of the blast.
