Explosives found in Chhattisgarh, police rule out threat to Narendra Modi, Sonia Gandhi rallies
Bastar, Chhattisgarh: Security personnel reportedly found 50 kg of explosives on Wednesday in poll-bound Chhattisgarh, where both Narendra Modi and Sonia Gandhi will address rallies today.

The state police ruled out any threat to the leaders as the bombs were found far from the sites of today's rallies - around 200 km from Kondagaon, the venue of Congress president Sonia Gandhi's rally, and some 300 kms from Kanker where Mr Modi is to address a rally.

Sources said two Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) of 25 kg each were found and defused in Chintalnar in interior Bastar, known for Maoist violence. In 2010, 76 jawans had been killed here in a single ambush, in one of the worst Maoist attacks the country had seen.

Security at political rallies have been tightened after multiple blasts targeted Mr Modi's rally in Patna on October 27, killing six people and injuring 83 others. The terror group Indian Mujahideen was allegedly behind the attacks.

Sonia Gandhi and Mr Modi, the BJP's prime ministerial candidate, will address rallies just a few kilometers apart, in their first direct face-off ahead of the state polls later this month.

Assembly polls in Chhattisgarh will be held in two phases due to the major security implications in the state afflicted by Naxal violence. Recently, the home ministry had issued an advisory warning that Maoists were gathering forces and preparing to launch a massive offensive to disrupt the polls on November 11 and 19.
