Balaghat: Police has recovered a large amount of explosives from the jungles in Maoist-affected Balaghat district in Madhya Pradesh, which could have been meant for a major attack by the Left-wing extremists in Chhattisgarh.

The explosives were stored by Maoists in the jungles of Sitapala, the police said on Tuesday.

"Late on Monday night the Hawk Force along with a police team under the command of the Sub-Divisional Officer of Lanji, Pradeep Sharma, conducted a search operation on Ghagra road. They discovered a black polythene bag containing the explosives," Additional Director General of Police G. Janardana told IANS.

Janardana said the bag contained sodium nitrate, urea, detonator, electrical wires, and metal and glass pieces.

He said the consignment could have been part of a major conspiracy.

A case has been registered at Bahela police station against 15-20 Maoists.

Police believe the Maoists were planning to mount a major attack in Chhattisgarh.

A few days ago police nabbed two persons from Balaghat who extorted money from contractors in order to fund Maoists.
