Thrissur:
With their ear to the ground, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi arrived in Tamil Nadu's Trichy on Wednesday to oversee the Youth Congress's organizational elections.
After a successful recruitment drive for the Youth Congress, Rahul Gandhi has his eye firmly fixed on the Assembly elections due in Tamil Nadu next year.
This is Rahul's second visit to Tamil Nadu in less than a year. More than 13 lakh youth in the state had reportedly joined the Youth Congress after his tour last year. The enthusiasm seemed no less this time.
"This will definitely strengthen the Congress in Tamil Nadu, particularly at the ward and panchayat level," said a resident of Trichy.
The ruling DMK is in a tricky situation in Tamil Nadu. Many of DMK's allies have walked out and the state government depends on the Congress for its survival.
With Assembly polls just a year away, Congress workers are demanding their pound of flesh from the DMK.
"Yes the Congress has grown a lot in Tamil Nadu and next time certainly we will seek more seats," said Sarubala Thonadaiman, former Mayor of Trichy.
The DMK is not worried about this, many say their youth wing is much stronger. On record they say this effort will strengthen the entire alliance in the state.
"We have seen golden jubilee and have a fifty lakh strong youth wing," said Thangam Thennarassu, School Education Minister, Tamil Nadu.
Before landing in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday, Rahul accompanied sister Priyanka and brother-in-law Robert Wadra to Thrissur in Kerala. But this was no political visit. Rahul and Priyanka were attending a wedding.
Dressed in trademark white kurta pyjama, Rahul, and Priyanka in a cool, green cotton sari, the Gandhi duo were the cynosure of all eyes as they arrived for the wedding of the son of one of Sonia Gandhi's staff members.
Rahul and Priyanka arrived at Nedumbassery airport in Kochi by a private aircraft and then went on to Thrissur to attend the wedding.
