Facebook India not excused from civil suit that deals with objectionable content

Facebook India not excused from civil suit that deals with objectionable content
New Delhi: A Delhi court has dismissed an appeal by Facebook India that asked for the internet company to be dropped from a civil suit that accuses websites of hosting objectionable content.

Facebook had argued that its Indian set-up does not host any content, and merely provides technical support to the parent company, based in the US.

At today's hearing, a local court said prima facie there is enough evidence to implead Facebook in the matter.

The lawsuit was filed in December by a Delhi resident named, Mufti Aizaz Arshad Kazmi. He had shown the court offensive religious cartoons and obscene morphed photos of politicians and deities.

Nearly 20 internet companies including Yahoo, Facebook and Google were  accused of allowing the posting of  "anti-religious" and "anti-social" content that could provoke communal tension.

The next hearing is scheduled for June 4.
