Mumbai: After facing flak from the Supreme Court for its "lack of concern" over the problem of malnutrition in Maharashtra's tribal areas, the state government swung into action and held a meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, to decide on a comprehensive nutrition policy.
Chief Minister Fadnavis on Wednesday reviewed the steps being taken by different districts to tackle malnutrition. He said that all the related departments would jointly come up with the nutrition policy for the state within 15 days.
The meeting was attended by members from his council and district collectors of Palghar, Thane, Amravati, Yavatmal, Gadchiroli, Nandurbar, Ahmednagar.
Maharashtra has been getting flak from the High Court and the Supreme Court following reports of children dying due to malnutrition.
The National Human Rights Commission also served a notice to the state after reports that more than 600 children had died in the tribal district of Palghar, barely 100km from Mumbai.
Last week NDTV had highlighted how large scale vacancies both for anganwadi workers as well as medical staff in Palghar have exacerbated the problem of fighting malnutrition. The chief minister has said that vacant posts of medical staff should be filled immediately.
Another problem of frontline workers has been erratic payments. Mr Fadnavis has said that timely payments to anganwadi workers should be ensured.
