Family says journalist's death was not honour killing

Koderma, Jharkhand: A team of forensic experts arrived at a small house in Koderma, Jharkhand on Wednesday. It's task: To search for evidence that the 23-year-old girl found dead earlier this week in her bedroom was killed by her family.  The young woman's mother has been arrested for the murder. Her alleged motive: An honour killing for a daughter who wanted to marry a man from a different caste.

Despite the arrest, the Pathak family sticks to its stand - Nirupama, who had moved to Delhi from her hometown first to study journalism and then to work at the Business Standard - was not killed. Nirupama's brother, Samrendra, says, "We want a correct interpretation of the post-mortem report . We are ready to cooperate with any investigation. If anyone from my family has done anything wrong , let his hands and legs be cut."

Is this a case of desperate posturing? The Pathaks insist Nirupama killed herself, but medical reports show she was smothered and her injuries suggest she was overpowered by a group of people, say the police. (Watch: We are very sad for Nirumapa, says father)
