Farmers claim the expressway is being diverted to their agricultural land because the government wants to bring Kannauj on the roadmap.
Kannauj:
In Uttar Pradesh's Kannauj district, constituency of state chief minister Akhilesh Yadav's wife Dimple Yadav, a farmer reportedly died after he fell ill because he was protesting against the acquisition of his land for the Agra-Lucknow expressway.
42-year-old Babulal was admitted to the Kannauj Medical College after he fell sick during the month-long agitation against the proposed acquisition of land belonging to almost 400 farmers in the district.
The farmer's family claims he was recently exposed to harsh cold and heavy rain at the protest site in Phagua Bhatta.
The farmers claim that the expressway is being diverted to their agricultural land because the government wants to bring the VIP constituency of Kannauj on the roadmap. As a result, they fear losing their fertile land to the expressway.
Earlier, the road was mapped to pass through Umarda where land is mostly barren. Later, five villages in the area were notified for surrendering their land.
The district administration claims that Babulal just happens to be from one of the villages protesting against the acquisition of land. They call his death "accidental" and say it is unrelated to the protests against the expressway project.
The details of Babulal's autopsy report are awaited.
