Ghaziabad:
BJP leader Rajnath Singh was arrested by the Uttar Pradesh police in Ghaziabad today soon after he began a day-long fast in support of agitating farmers in western UP. Party leader Arun Jaitley was also arrested along with him.
"UP Chief Minister Mayawati should step down and the state government should stop acquiring land until the Land Acquisition Amendment Bill is passed by Parliament," Rajnath Singh said before he was detained.
Condemning the violence in Bhatta Parsaul, which witnessed clashes between police and farmers last week, Singh said, "Mayawati has lost her moral right to continue as Chief Minister and she should resign."
"Land acquisition law needs to be scrapped and I shall raise the issue in Parliament," he said as he began his fast at 12:30 pm. He will continue his fast till noon tomorrow.
Singh had been detained when he tried to enter Bhatta Parsaul - the epicenter of the farmers' protests - a few days ago, albeit with much less attention.
Joining the protests, senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley criticised the Centre for the delay in introducing the bill to amend the Land Acquisition Act.
He blamed the UPA's government's attitude on the issue for the "murders" of farmers in police firing in Greater Noida and said the Centre "cannot escape responsibility."
