On Saturday, a 35-year-old farmer set him on fire at Anuppur in Madhya Pradesh. The event came after police detained his parents, who were sitting on dharna demanding greater compensation for farm land that had been acquired from them for an industrial project. He has been shifted to Jabalpur for better medical treatment.
Anantram's farm land was acquired by the state government under Land Acquisition Act two years ago, to be given to Moser Baer, whihc has been in the process of setting up a power plant in the area for the past five years. His family had been paid compensation of Rs 6 lakh, but had not been satisfied with the amount, and had been sitting on dharna since Friday morning.
After Anantram attempted suicide, angry villagers marched towards the power plant site and set an earth moving equipment on fire. When police intervened, the villagers pelted stones, injuring a number of police personnel. The police fire in the air to control the situation. However, one man was injured in the firing.
